Editorial Policy

What has to be true before something is published here, what happens when it turns out not to be, and the list of things we will not write regardless of what it would earn.

Sourcing standards

Before a figure appears on this site it has to clear one of four bars:

  1. Published by the manufacturer or a retail listing. Dimensions, alloy, weight, burner ratings, warranty terms and what ships in the box. Cited to the specific listing or document, with a numbered source under the block it appears in.
  2. Quoted from a code or standards body. Clearance distances and the recreational-fire definition are quoted from the International Fire Code with the section number, and linked.
  3. Published by a government source. The propane energy content used in every running-cost calculation comes from the US Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center.
  4. Computed here from cited inputs. Runtime per tank and similar figures are arithmetic we performed. They are marked as computed and the inputs and formula are shown alongside the result, so the working can be checked.

Anything that clears none of those bars does not go on the page. The most common casualty is the smoke-reduction percentage: figures circulate widely in this category with no published test method behind them, so none appears here.

What we will never publish

  • A claim that we tested a product. We have not burned any of them. Every product page states this and lists what a specification sheet cannot tell you.
  • A fabricated review, testimonial or rating. Ring & Ember has no customers, so there is no testimonials section anywhere on the site. There is no self-authored review or rating in our structured data either, for the same reason: marking an editorial opinion up as a review rating would contradict the copy beside it.
  • A credential the author does not hold. No certifications, no trade qualifications, no editorial team, no expert panel.
  • A price we cannot source live. Prices render from a live feed with a 48-hour freshness gate, or they do not render at all.
  • An invented ASIN or product. Every product identifier on this site was read off a live retailer URL. Where we do not have one, the buy link is a search rather than a fabricated product page.
  • A summary of a local ordinance we have not read. We quote the model code and describe how to find your local rule. We do not publish a state-by-state table of laws that are actually set city by city.
  • Urgency or scarcity language. No “buy now”, no “don’t miss out”. There is no inventory here and no deadline.

Corrections

Errors get fixed, and we would rather hear about one from a reader than leave it up. Send a correction here or email info@ringandember.com. A source makes it fast.

  • A wrong figure is corrected as soon as we can verify the right one, and the page’s “last updated” date changes with it.
  • A materially wrong recommendation gets a visible note on the pageexplaining what changed, rather than a silent edit.
  • Typos and clarifications are fixed without a note.
  • If we cannot verify a claimed error, we say so rather than removing a sourced figure on request.

Review cadence

  • Prices: daily. The live data layer is refreshed on a schedule and prices older than 48 hours stop rendering automatically.
  • Product specifications: when a listing changes or a reader flags it. Manufacturers revise products without renaming them, which is a known weakness of a specification-based method and the reason a correction is genuinely useful to us.
  • Code and regulatory pages: on adoption of a new code edition, and whenever a reader points out a discrepancy. These pages quote the model code, which changes on a multi-year cycle.
  • Rankings: when a new product enters the category or a specification changes enough to move one.

Every page shows the date it was last updated. That date is real content history.

Authorship

Everything on this site is written by Scooter M., and every page carries that byline and links to the bio. There is no editorial team and no ghost-written content. Where a page is compiled from published sources rather than argued, it is still the same byline, because the compiling is the work.

Commercial relationships

Ring & Ember earns affiliate commission, disclosed on every page that carries a link. Commission rate is not an input to any ranking, no manufacturer has paid for a position, and no product has been supplied to us. The full disclosure.

AI and content generation

Research, drafting and editing tools are used in producing this site. That does not change any of the standards above: every figure still has to be sourced, every code quotation still has to be checked against the code, and every ASIN still has to come from a live retailer URL. A tool that produces a plausible number is exactly the reason the sourcing bar exists.
