Fire Pit Surfaces and Pads

Concrete can blow off its own surface, river rock can fracture, and gravel just works. What to put a fire pit on, and what never to build one from.

The short answer

Gravel is the best surface: it drains, it does not crack, and heat passes through it. Concrete and pavers work but can spall — trapped moisture flashing to steam blows a layer off the surface. Never use river rock or wet fieldstone, which can fracture violently when heated.

Spalling, and why concrete surprises people

Concrete is porous and holds water. Heat it fast and the water in the pores turns to steam faster than it can escape, and the pressure blows a flake off the surface. That is spalling, and it is the thing people mean when they say a fire pit 'cracked' their patio — usually it has not cracked, it has lost its face in patches.

It is not inevitable and it is not rare. It is most likely when the concrete is damp — after rain, early in the season — and when a hot pit sits directly on it with no air gap. A pit on legs, or a slab or mat between the pit and the patio, prevents nearly all of it. Sealed concrete is worse rather than better in this respect, because the sealer slows evaporation and traps more moisture in the surface layer.

Building a pad that lasts

  1. 1Size it generously. The pad should extend well past the pit — enough for the pit plus a comfortable standing margin all round. Undersized pads mean you are always stepping onto grass or mud.
  2. 2Excavate a few inches and put down a compacted base of crushed stone. This is what stops it settling unevenly.
  3. 3Landscape fabric under the base, not under the top layer, keeps weeds out without impeding drainage.
  4. 4Finish in gravel, pavers or fire brick. Gravel is the least work and the most forgiving of heat.
  5. 5Slope it very slightly so water runs off rather than pooling under the pit.
  6. 6Add an edge restraint — steel edging or a paver border — or the gravel migrates into the lawn within a year.

If you are building a surround

A masonry surround around an in-ground ring is a different job from a pad, and the material rules tighten. The inner face is in direct contact with fire, so it wants fire brick, which is made to take repeated thermal cycling. Ordinary concrete block or brick will spall and crumble at the inner face over a few seasons.

Mortar matters too: standard mortar is not formulated for the temperatures at a fire face and degrades. Refractory mortar is. And never build a sealed enclosure around a fire — trapped moisture in the structure has to be able to escape, which is the same physics as spalling on a larger scale. Fire pit rings and inserts.

Staining, which is separate from damage

Two sources, both permanent on porous surfaces. Ash and soot wash off masonry with effort. Corten runoff does not — a weathering-steel pit deposits iron oxide on whatever is beneath it, and on concrete, pavers or stone that mark is there for good. If you own or want a corten pit, put it on gravel or grass and accept it, or buy stainless. Corten vs stainless.

Will a fire pit crack concrete?
It can spall it — trapped moisture flashing to steam blows a layer off the surface. It is most likely when the concrete is damp and the pit sits directly on it. An air gap or a pad prevents it.
What is the best surface for a fire pit?
Gravel. It drains, it does not crack, it lets heat through, and it is the cheapest of the good options. Fire brick is the best material for a built surround.
Can you put a fire pit on pavers?
