How Do You Hide the Propane Tank on a Fire Pit?
The tank is the part nobody designs around. A cover table turns it into furniture — provided it is ventilated, outdoors, and not the sealed box the word cover suggests.

Put it in a ventilated hideaway table beside the pit. The best of these is the Ciays 2-in-1 — it is the only one here that publishes a powder-coated steel construction and adjustable feet, which are the two things that decide whether it survives outdoors and whether it rocks on paving. If you need to know the size before it arrives, the Garvee 16 in is the only cover in the set that publishes a diameter. What you must not do is put the cylinder in anything sealed, or anywhere low and enclosed: propane vapor is heavier than air, and the fire code is explicit that containers are not to be stored in a basement, pit or similar location where heavier-than-air gas might collect.
Why this is a problem worth solving
A hose-fed propane fire pit has a design gap its makers rarely acknowledge. The pit itself is a finished object. The 20 lb cylinder that runs it is a scuffed steel bottle with a safety collar, and it has to sit somewhere within hose reach of the pit, in full view, on the patio you spent money on.
Fire tables solve this with an enclosed base — that is a large part of what the extra money buys, and it is covered on fire pit vs fire table. Hose-fed bowls do not solve it at all. A cover table is the retrofit.
The rule that governs every product here
The same physics is written into the code. International Fire Code 6109.7 states that 'LP-gas containers shall not be stored in a basement, pit or similar location where heavier-than-air gas might collect', and 6109.9 caps storage inside a building open to the public at 200 pounds of LP-gas. The practical reading for a homeowner is short: the cylinder lives outdoors, upright, with air around it. A cover makes it acceptable to look at in the place it is already allowed to be. It does not make it safe anywhere new, and a sunken patio well or a below-grade light well is exactly the 'similar location' the code means.
One more practical point: a dark steel box in direct summer sun gets hot inside. None of these covers publishes a vented panel or a temperature figure, so the sensible precaution is placing it where it gets afternoon shade rather than relying on the product to manage it. The tanks, hoses and regulators page has the rest of the handling detail, including the two-minute leak check that should happen whenever the cylinder is reconnected.
How we judged these
- Ranked on what the listing publishes about construction, because an outdoor steel box lives or dies on its coating and almost none of these say what theirs is.
- Then on whether a dimension is given at all. One of the five publishes a diameter. Planning a patio around the other four means guessing.
- Then on the details that matter in use — adjustable feet on uneven paving, side handles for moving it with the cylinder inside.
- Every figure is quoted from the current retail listing and cited on that product's own spec sheet. Where a listing publishes nothing, the row says so, and in this category that is the majority of rows.
- What we did not do: fit a cylinder in any of these, measure a temperature inside one, or assess ventilation beyond noting that all five are open-bottomed.

The five, compared

One published material. One published dimension. One published foot design. Across five products, that is the whole of what this category is prepared to tell you — which is why the two that publish anything rank where they do.

- Powder coat rather than paint, which is the difference between two seasons and five on an outdoor steel box
- Adjustable feet — the detail that matters on anything but a dead-level slab
- Side handles mean you can shift it with the tank inside
- No dimensions published, so matching it to a table height is guesswork
- A steel box around a propane cylinder traps heat on a hot day; keep it shaded
- 2-in-1 means it is also a side table, and it is a small one
Anyone with a hose-fed fire bowl whose tank currently sits in the open next to the patio furniture.

- A published diameter, which is the single most useful number here and almost unique in the set
- Explicitly states it fits any standard 20 lb cylinder rather than a proprietary size
- Side handles for moving it loaded
- Metal with no alloy or coating named, so corrosion behavior is unknown
- Sixteen inches is narrow for a usable side table
- No height published, only diameter

- Plain black finish disappears next to most gas fire bowls
- Doubles as a storage side table rather than being a bare shroud
- BAIDE HOME is an established maker in this category rather than a one-listing brand
- No material published at all, which on an outdoor product is the main thing you would want to know
- No dimensions
- Costs more than covers that do publish their construction

- Side storage for the things that otherwise live on the ground next to the tank
- Listed for grills and griddles too, so it is not stranded if the pit changes

- No material and no dimensions published
- Open storage sides mean rain gets into them
- Storage pockets on an outdoor steel product are a rust seam waiting to happen

A gray concrete-look round cover, which is the only one here that is trying to be furniture rather than a shroud. It is also the most expensive and sold under a generic brand.
- The only finish here that reads as outdoor furniture next to stone or composite decking
- Round shape sits better against a round fire bowl than a square box does
- Side handles despite the heavier look
- Sold under a generic brand with no maker to go back to
- Concrete look does not tell you whether it is concrete, resin or coated steel — and that decides the weight and the lifespan
- The most expensive cover in this set
A finished patio where the tank is the only thing that looks temporary.

What to measure before you order
Does a cover change anything about how the pit runs?
No, and it should not. The cylinder still breathes, the regulator still works the same way, and the burn time is unchanged — our arithmetic on how much propane a fire pit uses applies exactly as before.
The one honest caveat is cold weather. A cylinder's vapor pressure drops as it gets colder, which is why the flame falls off on a hard winter night. A cover is not insulation and will not fix that; it will not make it worse either.
What we would skip
- Any enclosure that seals
Propane is heavier than air. A leak inside a sealed box pools at the bottom instead of dispersing, which is the exact condition you do not want next to an ignition source. Every cover here is open-bottomed and that is not an oversight — it is the design requirement.
- Moving the cylinder into a basement, a pit or a sunken patio well
This is the serious one, and it is written into the fire code rather than being advice. IFC 6109.7: 'LP-gas containers shall not be stored in a basement, pit or similar location where heavier-than-air gas might collect.' A cover is for making a cylinder look better where it is already allowed to be, not for moving it somewhere new.
- A deck box or storage bench pressed into service
A sealed plastic deck box is the worst version of the first problem: it traps gas, it traps heat, and it is not rated for anything of the kind.
- Buying before you have checked the hose reach
A cover adds width between the pit and the cylinder. On a 10 ft hose that is usually fine; on a short factory hose it can be the difference between a tidy setup and a stretched one. Measure first.
