Steel Gauge and Alloy in a Fire Pit
The single spec that predicts how long a fire pit lasts, and the one most listings refuse to publish. What each metal does, and how to read a gauge number.

Three metals matter: 304 stainless resists corrosion by composition and has no coating to fail; corten forms a stable rust layer on purpose and stains what it sits on; coated carbon steel relies on paint that eventually burns off. Gauge is thickness — a lower gauge number means thicker steel.
Why this is the load-bearing spec
A fire pit has no moving parts. It does not wear out mechanically, and nothing in it is going to break. What ends its life is corrosion: heat cycling, moisture, ash that holds water against the metal, and time. So the question 'how long will this last' is entirely a question about metal, and it is the only durability question worth asking.
Which makes it striking how many listings will not answer it. 'Heavy-duty steel', 'premium steel' and 'durable metal construction' are the standard formulations, and they mean nothing. Every one of the pits we recommend publishes its alloy, and several publish a gauge. That is a low bar, and clearing it is genuinely informative about the maker.
What a gauge number means
Sheet steel thickness is expressed as a gauge, and the scale runs backwards: a smaller number is thicker steel. 16-gauge is thicker than 20-gauge, which is thicker than 22-gauge. The scale also differs between steel types, so a gauge number strictly needs the metal alongside it to be meaningful.

Approximate. Gauge tables differ slightly between standards and between steel types, which is one reason a metric thickness is more useful when a maker gives one — the Sunnydaze fire rings state 2 mm, which needs no interpretation.
Thickness buys two things. It buys time before perforation, because there is more metal to lose to corrosion. And it buys resistance to warping, because a thicker sheet holds its shape through repeated heat cycling. A thin bowl that has warped no longer sits flat, which is a nuisance long before it is a hole.
The three alloys
304 stainless steel
Stainless is not a coating. Chromium in the alloy — around 18% in 304 — reacts with oxygen to form a thin, transparent chromium-oxide layer over the whole surface, and that layer reforms when it is scratched. This is why a stainless pit that has been dragged across gravel is still a stainless pit, and why there is nothing to maintain.
Its weakness is chloride. Salt attacks the passive layer locally and creates pitting corrosion, which is why coastal properties and areas that use road salt see stainless pit in a way inland properties do not. No warranty in this category covers it. If you live near salt water, this is the one thing to weigh against stainless.
Corten, or weathering steel
Corten is alloyed with copper, chromium and nickel so that the rust it forms is dense and adherent rather than flaky, and that layer then slows further corrosion. It is the material used for weathering-steel bridges and building cladding, chosen precisely so nobody has to repaint them.
For a fire pit in a permanent outdoor spot, it is an excellent choice and will likely outlast stainless. Two caveats, both absolute. It stains, and the runoff mark on concrete, pavers or decking is permanent. And the patina takes time to stabilize — how long depends on your climate and how wet the pit gets, and no maker publishes a timeline. During that period it looks and behaves like ordinary rust.
Coated carbon steel
Plain carbon steel with paint, powder coat or a high-temperature finish over it. Cheap, and completely dependent on the coating: once the finish fails over the burn zone — which it will, because that is the hottest part — the metal underneath corrodes at the normal rate for bare steel.
This is not automatically a bad buy. A 2 mm painted fire ring at a low price is a sensible product: the coating fails, the thick steel keeps going for years, and replacing it eventually costs very little. What is a bad buy is thin painted sheet at a high price, sold on appearance, with no gauge stated.
Cast iron, briefly
Cast iron sits outside the sheet-steel scale. It is thick by nature, it does not burn through the way sheet does, and its oxidized finish has nothing to flake off. It surface-rusts everywhere, permanently, and that is normal rather than a defect. The trade is weight and brittleness — cast iron cracks rather than bends if it is dropped or thermally shocked.
How to read a listing
- 1Find the alloy. If the listing does not name one, treat the pit as coated carbon steel, because that is what it almost certainly is.
- 2Find the gauge or thickness. A metric figure like '2 mm' is more useful than a gauge number. If neither appears, assume thin.
- 3Read the warranty exclusions, not the term. Almost every lifetime warranty in this category excludes rust, which is the only failure mode that matters.
- 4Check the country of manufacture if it is published. It is verifiable and it is rare.
- 5Match the metal to the surface. Corten anywhere with a finish underneath is the wrong answer regardless of quality.
