A 36 in outer, 30 in inner steel liner, 10 in tall, 2 mm thick, weighing 25 lb, finished in high-temperature paint and installable above or below ground. It contains the fire and stops the pit walls collapsing inward. That is the entire product, and it is enough.

- Nothing to break. It is a rolled steel band
- Contains the fire and stops the pit walls collapsing inward, which is the actual job
- Costs a fraction of any manufactured pit of the same diameter
- No smoke reduction of any kind. This is an open fire
- Painted carbon steel will rust, so plan on replacing it eventually
- At 30 in of interior you are within inches of the 3 ft recreational-fire threshold
A yard with room to dig, and someone who wants an open wood fire and nothing else.
You have neighbors close enough to care about smoke, or you live where open burning needs a permit.

There is almost nothing here, and that is the point
Every other pit on this site is a manufactured object with a design argument behind it — double walls, a searing rim, a concealed cylinder, a fan. This is a band of rolled steel. There are no moving parts, no coating over a complex geometry, no accessory ecosystem and nothing that can fail in an interesting way.
What it does is real work, though, and it is worth being precise about what: it contains the fire, and it holds back the walls of the hole. A dug pit without a liner slumps inward over a season or two, and the fire spreads sideways into loose soil. The ring is the thing that stops both.
The size question is the reason to read the rules first
30 in of usable interior sits within inches of the 3 ft threshold that separates a recreational fire from open burning in most codes based on the International Fire Code. That is not a warning about this specific product — it is the honest observation that this ring lands right at the line, and the 42 in version crosses it.
The practical consequence is that the definition matters more here than it does for a 19 in bowl, where the question never arises. Read what counts as a recreational fire in your jurisdiction before you dig, because the hole is not easy to undo. What counts as a recreational fire · Are fire pits legal in a backyard?.
Painted carbon steel is a consumable finish
High-temperature paint over a burn zone is not a permanent coating and no manufacturer claims otherwise. It will go, and then the carbon steel underneath rusts. The listing does not state how many seasons the paint survives and we found no published figure, so treat the ring as a periodic replacement rather than a lifetime purchase.
At this price that is a defensible trade rather than a defect — replacing a steel band every few years costs less than most single accessories for the premium pits. But it is the difference between this and a stainless or corten pit, and it is worth going in knowing it. Steel gauge and alloy, explained · Rust and maintenance.
It is an open fire, with everything that implies
No smoke reduction of any kind is claimed and none is delivered. This is a plain open wood fire, which means smoke goes where the wind takes it and embers leave the pit. If you have neighbors close enough to mind the smoke, or you live somewhere open burning needs a permit, this is the wrong product and a smokeless pit or a gas bowl is the right one.
It also means ember control is on you. A spark screen is a stated condition in a lot of local rules and this ring does not come with one. How smokeless pits differ · Burn bans.
