Fire Pit BTU Ratings, Explained
A BTU rating tells you how fast the appliance burns fuel. It does not tell you how warm you will be. Both halves of that sentence matter when you are choosing.

A BTU rating is the rate at which the appliance consumes fuel at full output — one BTU is the energy to raise a pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. For a patio fire pit, 40,000 to 60,000 BTU/hr is the normal range, and above 50,000 the differences matter far less than distance and wind.
It is a consumption rate, not a temperature
This is the misunderstanding that sells fire pits. A 60,000 BTU/hr burner does not make you warmer than a 50,000 BTU/hr one in any straightforward way — it burns fuel 20% faster and therefore releases 20% more energy per hour. Where that energy goes is a separate question, decided by the pit's geometry, how high the flame sits, whether there is a wind screen, and above all how far away you are sitting.
Radiant heat falls off with the square of the distance. Moving your chair from six feet to four feet away roughly doubles what reaches you — a larger effect than the entire difference between the smallest and largest burner in this category. That is worth knowing before you pay for BTU you will then sit too far away to feel.

Why BTU only means something on gas
You will see BTU figures attached to wood-burning fire pits. They are not comparable to these and should not be treated as specifications. A gas burner is an engineered orifice consuming a known fuel at a known rate, which is why the number is consistent unit to unit. A wood fire's output depends on the species, the moisture content, the mass alight and how far into the burn you are — a single figure describes a condition nobody defined. This site quotes BTU for gas appliances only, and says so. What we can and cannot say about wood-pit heat.
Things that matter more than the rating
- 1Distance. The inverse-square law dominates everything else on this page.
- 2Wind. A 10 mph breeze removes more perceived warmth than 20,000 BTU adds.
- 3Flame height and burner geometry. A wide, low burner under a mesh of glass throws heat differently from a tall central flame.
- 4Whether there is a wind guard. A glass surround makes a modest burner feel considerably better and is usually a cheaper upgrade than more BTU.
- 5Seating layout. Chairs pulled in a foot are worth more than a bigger burner.
